SOS Pets and the Seward Animal Shelter

A little bit about SOS Pets

SOS Pets partners with the existing shelter, The Seward Animal Shelter, to provide housing, care and medical attention for homeless and impounded animals. The Seward Animal Shelter is a municipal animal shelter for the City of Seward. Their goal is to have a community full of healthy, happy pets living with loving and responsible humans. They provide emergency animal control services 24 hours a day, enforce animal related city ordinances and patrol the city for stray dogs. The shelter temporarily homes impounded animals as well as animals available for adoption. They have informational literature and books on behavioral problems, training tips and pet care. We invite you to stop in for a visit with the animals and staff, take a shelter dog for a walk along the beach or groom a cat... ...and maybe meet your new best friend.

We offer a reduced cost spay and neuter voucher for Seward area pets.
We provide funds for emergency vet care for homeless pets.
We are working to provide a new animal shelter to the community.
We strive to raise awareness for homeless pets.
We support our existing shelter, its residents and its staff.

Our involvement

We raise money everyday for SOS Pets & the Seward Animal Shelter by offering a round-up option at the register during each transaction. The Guest has the option to round-up to the next whole dollar or dollars. In 2019, 6,536 people rounded up over $4000 a penny at a time.

Annual Events

For the last 2 years we have done Pet pics with Santa & Valentines Pet Pics. We have had over 200 two legged and four legged friends participate in these events at our store including stuffed animals, hedge hogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and even a bird or too.

How you can help

Because the Animal Shelter is under direct management of the Police Department, shelter employees cannot accept gratuities (i.e. donations) under current municipal code. If you would like to make a donation you can do one of the following:

  • material items like food, blankets, towels, toys, treats, etc can be dropped off at City Hall. There is a drop box near the police department where the phones used to be.
  • if you want to donate to the new animal shelter, money and checks can be dropped off at City Hall with the utilities cashier. Any checks written to the Animal Shelter will be deposited in the city's fund for the new shelter.
  • If you want to make a donation to the day-to-day general operations of the shelter, make your check to SOS Pets* and write "operations" on the memo line. There is a secure drop box in the animal shelter or you can send your check in the mail to PO Box 3003, Seward, AK 99664. OR you can donate online on our website (www.sospetsak.org) or here on our Facebook page.
  • If you want to make a donation to the new shelter account SOS Pets/Cause for Paws manages, make your check to SOS Pets* and write "new shelter" on the memo line. There is a secure drop box at the animal shelter or you can send your check in the mail to PO Box 3003, Seward, AK 99664. OR you can donate online on our website (www.sospetsak.org) or here on our Facebook page.

*Checks made to SOS Pets are considered tax deductible.
