The "Spread Eagle" Experience. I photographed this majestic bald eagle soaring overhead while camping out he Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska.

Bald Eagle Factoids

  • The bald eagle is Alaska's largest resident bird of pray with a wing span of up to 7 1/2 feet wide and a weight of 8 to 14 pounds
  • The total population in Alaska is estimated at 30,000
  • The head of the bald eagle turns white at about five years of age and signifies they are mature enough to mate.
  • Juvenile bald eagle can be confused with golden eagles because of their brown coloration. 
  • The bald eagle was given it's name by American colonists at a time when bald (or "balled") meant white, not hairless.
