Photo description: At the stroke of midnight on October 13, 2012 from Anchorage, Alaska, waves of green auroras reflect across the amazingly calm water of Lake Hood, the largest seaplane base in the world. In this single 6-second exposure (no computer tricks) I used my headlamp to illuminate this stunning Cessna 195 float plane. Even with the bright glow of the Anchorage International Airport in the background, this was a brilliant aurora display. No bright city lights were going to stop this show from going on!

Local photographer Todd Salat is known across Alaska for his photos of the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, as well as breath-taking Alaska landscapes.
