The “Polar Vortex” Experience
Auroras spiral out of control above the moon, mountains and a cabin near Trapper Creek, Alaska at around 2 am on the spring equinox, March 20, 2021. These auroras were big.... HUGE!!!!
Earlier in the evening a wall of northern lights had stormed the sky then faded from view. This gave me a chance to regroup and discover this cool cabin in Denali State Park. The moon was setting over the Alaska Range when a second and even bigger wave of auroras consumed the sky. I was getting absolutely blown away by the variety of wild & bizarre shapes when this “Polar Vortex” of swirling energy developed. In over 30 years of aurora viewing, I had never seen an aurora spiral of this magnitude. I just let it pull me into its fold.
