During wintertime the Tufted Puffin are not concerned about their looks and are relatively drab. But come summertime, watch out, they put on a beautiful face for the mating season. Both sexes grow lusciously long, golden tufts of eyebrows and sharpen up their eyeliner. That striking orange beak is actually platelets grown over its normal beak, and they'll be shed when the summer fireworks are over.
This majestic seabird is abundant in the Kenai Fjords near Seward, Alaska where I had a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging time wing-shooting them with a telephoto lens. A shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second froze this speeding bullet.
