This illustration was inspired by the Revelation Mountains of Alaska. It is a rugged subrange that marks the farthest west extent of the Alaska Range with Mount Hesperus being the highest peak (9,828 feet/2,996 m). The Revelations drain to the northwest by the Big River.
I drew this as I sat on the river banks of the Big River staring out at the Revelation Mountains to the east. Alaska really knows how to make you feel humble and this was definitely one of those places. With the granite spires, rising out of relatively low-elevation glacial valleys, the high vertical relief makes the range a very dramatic place. I could feel the remoteness of this untouched land in every bone of my body. Everything about it was incredibly magical.
The inspiration came from this area, but this tranquil scene reminds me of many places in Alaska.
