Heart of Art: Latitude 67 Designs

It's time for the September First Friday Art Walk! We can't believe how fast summer has gone; it's been an amazing season yet again! This month, we are showcasing the art of Latitude 67, a husband-and-wife team that we've been working with for many years!

Gale and Dave Glenn create unique laser-cut wooden artwork. Their laser-cutting studio is located in the Mat-Su Valley of Alaska, where they've lived since 1979. They both have several careers under their belts, including running an air taxi service, but Latitude 67 is their passion project. They started out by creating a variety of unique etched products, including custom trophies, wooden plaques, and even aviation instrument panels. Gale has always been driven to continuously challenge herself, which led her to start the Alaska-inspired layered art series. We sell these unique pieces at our shop in Seward, Alaska!

The process behind their work is incredibly intricate and distinct. They collect fallen trees from the land around their studio (typically birch and alder) and sand them down. Then, they cut all of the wood and start working on etching the designs. Dave does all of the sanding and cutting, while Gale works on the etching. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and made with so much intention. Gale and Dave's love for Alaska and their craft is so evident in their work.

Some of our favorite pieces in the shop are the Leaping Salmon, Three Layer Bear Paw, and Foxy Foxtail. They also create some awesome ornaments that are the perfect Alaskan memento!
