The midnight sun here in Alaska tends to turn us all into night owls! For those of us who live in Alaska year-round, taking advantage of the extended daylight is a must. If you plan to travel to Alaska during the summer months, you'll have lots of daylight to take advantage of! Let's go over some of our team's favorite ways to enjoy the midnight sun!
We love a good late-night campfire! Some of our favorite spots in town are the Resurrection River and Fourth of July Beach. Grab some S'mores ingredients and a guitar for a superb evening:) Pro Smore's tip: add some of our fireweed chocolate for extra Alaskan flavor! Make sure to leave no trace and pour water over your fire before leaving.
There are so many hiking trails to choose from in and around Seward. Some of our favorites for an afternoon hike are Tonsina Point, Vagt Lake, Bear Lake Loop, and the Resurrection River Trail. For a quick evening forest jaunt, we recommend a shorter hike like Two Lakes Trail or the Exit Glacier Overlook Loop. Make sure to be bear- and moose-aware and to bring your bear spray. Despite the extended daylight hours, we always recommend allowing ample time to make it back before sunset so you aren't out in the forest in the dark.
Seward is a great town for runners! From Waterfront Park to the Seward Highway, we have lots of options. Our team member, Maddy, trained for a half-marathon during the 2025 summer and has lots of recommendations on Seward running routes! Some of her favorites are the Exit Glacier Road, the Seward Highway, and Lowell Point Road. Always make sure you have reflective gear and a water bottle!
Some of our team members have grown fond of something called a "Wildflower Walk", which entails, you guessed it, going for a walk and making a wildflower bouquet ;) Make sure only to take a few flowers and to admire the rest...there are lots of creatures that require them for food:) Some of our favorite wildflowers in Alaska are lupine, fireweed, iris, and, of course, our state flower, the forget-me-not!
Foraging is a big thing here in Alaska, specifically for berries and mushrooms. June is a good time to find spruce tips, fireweed shoots, edible greens, and sometimes even fiddlehead ferns (make sure to cook properly to avoid getting sick). You can also harvest Devil's Club, but be careful and wear gloves! July and August are great months for harvesting wild berries like blueberries, salmonberries, and lingonberries. You can typically find mushrooms throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons in Alaska, depending on what you're looking for. Always make sure to consult a guide or expert on consuming what you forage to make sure it's safe. Happy foraging!
There are so many awesome bike routes here in Seward. We love biking the Exit Glacier Road, the Seward Highway, and the road to Lowell Point. You can rent a bike in town from the Seward Bike Shop!
Cold plunging is refreshing and so good for us! We love to take an ocean dip at Fourth of July Beach or Lowell Point Beach. On a sunny day in Seward, sitting on the beach and warming up before plunging into the cold ocean water is the absolute best! Don't forget a towel and a warm drink!
One of our team members was told the other day that once you move to Alaska, you become a birder. And honestly, that might be true. Some of our favorite flying creatures are the Bald Eagle, the Common Loon, and the Harlequin Duck. Grab our Guide to the Birds of Alaska book and some NOCS binoculars and get out there!
Hopefully, this has inspired you to get out and enjoy the extended daylight! We hope you have a wonderful summer!
