August is already here! With a new month comes another First Friday Art Walk extravaganza! We are excited to be showcasing the work of the famous Aurora Hunter, Todd Salat, for this month's art walk.
Todd is a photographer who specializes in capturing the aurora borealis. He's been chasing the northern lights since 1997 with his wife, Shay. The two of them operate as a team, traveling together in their heated camper to find and capture nature in her finest moments.
Todd has a contagious enthusiasm when talking about the northern lights. It is not surprising that photographing them is one of his favorite things to do. He is originally from Iowa, but has always been drawn to the mountains. After getting his degree in geology, he ventured north to Alaska. His first career was as a geologist in the oil industry. That didn't stop him from pursuing his passion. He spent several years chasing the aurora at night, catching a few hours of sleep and exploring for oil all day. Finally, he decided to take the plunge and resigned from his day job to become a full-time freelance photographer. He says he's never looked back and has been living from 2 pm to 7 am for the last 35+ years (except when on vacation with his wife, who is a day-walker).
Today, Todd lives in Anchorage with the love of his life, his wife Shay. Together, they travel all over the state of Alaska to capture the aurora borealis, following their mission statement to "be there, preserve the moment, and share it".
You can find Todd's work (or as he likes to call it, play) at our art gallery in Seward, Alaska. He and his wife are also at the Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market every Saturday and Sunday during the summer months. Be sure to check out Todd's website for some awesome tools to help you see the northern lights yourself!
Some of our favorite pieces are Kiss the Sky, Spruce Lantern, and Supernova. We will be showcasing Todd's "play" for the August First Friday Art Walk on August 7th from 6-8 pm. Join the art walk to support Seward's local businesses and Alaska's artists! Hope to see you in the shop soon!
